An electric gate is a motor, a control board, a set of safety devices, and a few hundred pounds of steel — and each of those fails in a way that leaves a distinct fingerprint. Before you start replacing parts, work out which of the five symptom families you are in. One safety note first: never put your hands inside a powered control box, and never stand in the gate’s path while testing.
Symptom 1: Nothing Happens At All
No movement, no sound, no lights.
Check power first. Gate operators usually run from a dedicated breaker or an outdoor GFCI, and both trip — especially after Houston storms. Reset the GFCI, check the panel, then look for a status light on the control board. No light means no power, which is an electrical problem, not a gate problem.
Then the battery. If your operator has battery backup and the mains supply has failed, the battery may have already been drained. Batteries also die of old age — three to five years in our heat — and a dead one can leave the whole system unresponsive.
Then the board fuse. Most control boards carry a replaceable fuse. A blown fuse after a storm often means a surge event, and if the board took the hit, a new fuse will not bring it back.
Symptom 2: It Opens But Will Not Close
This asymmetry is the single most useful clue in gate troubleshooting, because closing is the direction protected by safety devices. Opening rarely is.
Photo eyes. Wipe both lenses, confirm they point directly at each other, and look at the indicator lights. Spider webs across the beam are a genuinely common Houston cause, as are shrubs that have grown into the path over a season.
Loops. A vehicle parked over an exit loop will hold a gate open. So will a cut or shorted loop wire — which happens after driveway work, root movement, or soil shift. The loop detector module usually has a fault light.
Safety edge. If your gate has a rubber edge sensor and its wire is damaged, the board reads it as permanently pressed.

Symptom 3: It Starts Closing, Then Reverses
The operator thinks it hit something. Sometimes it did. More often the gate has simply become harder to move than the operator expects, and the built-in obstruction sensing reads that resistance as an obstacle.
Disconnect the operator with the manual release and move the gate by hand. If it drags, binds, or fights you, the problem is mechanical — worn hinges, a shifted post, a packed slide track — and no amount of operator adjustment fixes it. Symptom 4: Noises
- Humming with no movement — the motor is getting power but cannot turn. Usually a failed capacitor or a stripped drive gear. Stop pressing the button; you are cooking the motor. More here.
- Grinding on a slide gate — friction in the drive system: debris in the track, a flat-spotted roller, or a worn gear rack. It destroys parts in a predictable order, so it gets more expensive the longer it runs. More here.
- Clicking from the control box — a relay trying to engage without enough voltage. Very often that dying backup battery again.
- Squealing on a swing gate — dry hinges or pivot points. The one item on this page you can genuinely fix with a grease gun.
Symptom 5: It Works Sometimes
Intermittent faults are the most frustrating and the most diagnosable, because the pattern tells you the cause.
- Works in the morning, quits in the afternoon — almost always a weak battery that holds charge when cool and sags under load once the box heats up.
- Fails after rain — moisture in the control box or a compromised loop. Check for water intrusion and corroded terminals with the power off.
- Fails in bright sun — photo eyes can be washed out by direct low sun hitting the receiver at certain times of year.
- Stopped right after a storm — surge damage. The board may still light up and behave erratically rather than failing cleanly.
- Only the remote fails — remote battery first, then pairing. If the keypad still works, the gate is fine. More here.
The Houston Factors
Three local conditions cause a disproportionate share of electric gate faults here. Expansive clay moves posts out of plumb, which turns into mechanical resistance, which turns into an operator that reverses. Summer heat kills batteries and stresses boards. And lightning takes out more control boards in this region than any other single cause, which is why surge protection belongs on every install.
When to Stop
Resetting a breaker, changing a remote battery, cleaning photo eyes, clearing a track, and greasing hinges are all safe. Anything past that — control boards, capacitors, motors, gearboxes, loop wiring, or a gate that has to come off its hinges — needs someone with a meter, the right parts, and the ability to lift a few hundred pounds of steel safely. Operator boxes carry line voltage and gates are heavy enough to cause serious injury.
