Solar or electric gate opener? Count the cycles.
Solar gate operators work well in Houston when they are sized right. Here is when they are the answer and when they are a mistake.
- ✓ $89 service call
- ✓ 30-minute callback
- ✓ Same-day service
- ✓ Owner-operated
- ✓ BBB Accredited & insured
A solar gate operator is a DC operator with a battery, charged by a panel instead of a transformer. That means every DC operator can be solar, and every solar operator is really a battery operator. The question is whether the panel can keep up with how often the gate moves.
Here is how we size it and when we tell people not to bother.
When solar is the right call
- ✓No power at the gate and trenching is expensive or impossible: long ranch drives, across a creek, under a paved road.
- ✓Residential use, roughly 10 to 30 cycles a day.
- ✓Good southern sun exposure at the post without tree shade.
- ✓You want the gate to keep working through grid outages.
When hardwired is the right call
- ✓Power is already at the gate or within a short trench.
- ✓Commercial or community gates with 50 or more cycles a day.
- ✓Heavy gates on operators that draw more than a panel can replace.
- ✓Shaded posts under Houston's live oaks and pines.
- ✓You want to run cameras, lit keypads, and an intercom off the same power.
Sizing for Houston weather
Houston gets long cloudy stretches, especially in winter and during tropical systems. We size the panel and battery bank for the gate's cycle count with several days of reserve, and we mount panels where they get real sun, not where they are convenient. An undersized solar system works in October and dies in January.
Best of both
The most reliable setup for many properties is a hardwired DC operator with a battery backup and a small solar panel as a trickle charger. Grid power does the work, the battery covers outages, and the panel keeps the battery healthy if the grid is down for days.
Frequently asked questions
Will a solar gate opener work on cloudy days?+
Yes, from the battery. A properly sized system stores several days of cycles. The failure mode is undersizing, not weather.
How long does the battery last?+
Two to four years in Houston heat. We use batteries rated for the operator and replace them on maintenance visits.
Can I add solar to my existing gate opener?+
If it is a DC operator like a LiftMaster LA400, Apollo 1500, or Viking G-5, yes. AC operators cannot run on solar.
Can solar power a keypad and camera too?+
A keypad, yes. A camera and intercom add significant draw; a cellular intercom on its own small panel is a common solution.
Is solar cheaper than trenching power?+
Often, when the trench is long or crosses pavement. For a short run, hardwired is usually less and more robust.
