Automatic Gate Opener Installation in Houston

Adding an opener to an existing gate, or replacing one that has finally given out, is one of the most common jobs we do. It is also one of the easiest to get wrong, because the single decision that determines how long the operator lasts happens before anything is mounted: sizing.

An operator running at the edge of its rating on every cycle fails in two to four years. The same gate with a correctly sized unit runs ten to fifteen. We size to the actual weight, width, and daily cycle count of your gate rather than to a generic residential spec, and on an existing gate we check that the posts, hinges, and frame can take the added stress before we hang anything on them.

Operators We Install

  • Swing gate operators — arm and articulated, single and dual leaf
  • Slide and cantilever gate operators
  • Solar operators for gates with no practical power run
  • Commercial and high-cycle operators for multi-family and industrial sites
  • Barrier arms for parking and vehicle control
  • LiftMaster, Viking, Apollo/Nice, DoorKing, US Automatic, and Eagle

What a Proper Installation Includes

The operator itself is maybe half the job. The rest is power, safety, and setup.

  • Power: conduit trenched from the panel, or a correctly sized solar package
  • Surge protection — lightning is the leading killer of control boards in Houston
  • Battery backup so the gate still works through an outage
  • Photo eyes and, where the design calls for it, a safety edge
  • Exit and safety loops cut into the driveway and sealed
  • Limit and force calibration so the gate stops where it should and reverses when it should
  • Access control: keypad, remotes, intercom, or smartphone control
  • A walkthrough covering the manual release, remote programming, and what to do in an outage

Solar Gate Openers

If your gate sits far from the house with no power nearby, solar removes the trenching entirely. Texas sun makes it viable almost everywhere in this region — the reason solar has a mixed reputation is undersized panels and cheap batteries, not the technology.

We size the panel and battery bank to your gate weight and realistic daily cycle count, with margin for cloudy stretches and for the efficiency loss that comes with summer heat. Done properly, a solar gate on acreage north or west of Houston runs year-round without a thought.

Safety Is Not Optional

Under UL 325, an automatic gate must have two independent means of entrapment protection in each direction of travel. The operator’s built-in obstruction sensing counts as one; the second has to be an external device such as photo eyes or a safety edge. An operator installed without them is not a compliant or safe installation, and it is one of the most common shortcuts we find on gates other companies have automated.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q
Can you automate the gate I already have?
Usually, yes. We check that the posts, hinges, and frame can handle the added stress, reinforce where the arm attaches if needed, and size the operator to the real weight of the existing gate. Retrofitting older ornamental iron gates is one of our most common requests.
Q
Which gate opener brand should I get?
For most Houston residential gates LiftMaster is the default because parts and service are widely available. Viking and Apollo suit heavier and higher-cycle applications, and DoorKing is common on multi-family. The more important decision is sizing the unit to your gate, not the badge on it.
Q
What if there is no power at my gate?
Two options: trench conduit from the panel, or a solar package. We price both during the site visit so you can compare, and we size solar with real margin rather than to the minimum that works on a sunny day.
Q
How long does the install take?
A straightforward opener installation on an existing gate is typically a one-day job. Add a day if a new power run has to be trenched, or if loops are being cut into the driveway.
Q
Do you install openers you did not supply?
We generally supply the operator so we can warranty the complete system and be certain it is correctly sized. If you have already purchased a unit, call and we will tell you honestly whether it suits your gate.
