The reason gate operators have all the sensors and settings they do is not manufacturer caution — it is a safety standard called UL 325, written after people, mostly children, were seriously hurt by automatic gates. Every operator sold in the US has to comply with it, but compliance depends on the installation, not just the box. A correctly rated operator installed without its safety devices is not a safe gate.
What UL 325 Actually Requires
In plain terms, an automatic gate operator has to have two independent means of entrapment protection in each direction of travel. The operator’s built-in inherent sensing — where the motor detects resistance and reverses — counts as one. The second has to be an external device: photo eyes, a safety edge, or in some designs another approved method. One alone is not enough, because inherent sensing only reacts after the gate has already made contact.
The standard also requires that the gate be installed so people cannot reach through it into moving parts, that pinch points where the gate passes a post or fence be guarded, that controls be positioned where the operator can see the gate, and that a clear warning sign be posted on each side.
The Four Gate Classes
UL 325 sorts operators by where they are used, and the class determines what protection is required:
- Class I — Residential. A single-family home, one to four units.
- Class II — Commercial or general access. Apartments, hotels, retail, parking garages — places the general public uses.
- Class III — Industrial or limited access. Warehouses, factories, loading docks; not intended for general public use.
- Class IV — Restricted access. Guarded industrial sites and utility installations, monitored or supervised.
Using a residential-class operator on a small apartment complex is a common and genuinely dangerous shortcut, and it is one of the things we check on commercial properties.
The Safety Devices, and What Each One Does
Photo eyes
A beam across the gate opening between a transmitter and a receiver (or a reflector). Break the beam and the gate stops or reverses. They are non-contact, which is the point: the gate never touches whatever is in the way. Most residential gates use one pair, but a gate that swings both directions or a wide opening often needs more than one.
Safety edges
A pressure-sensitive rubber strip along the leading edge of the gate. Something presses it, the gate reverses. Contact-based, so it is a backup rather than a first line, but it catches things a beam can miss — a low object, a pet under the beam height, a hand at the pinch point.
Inherent obstruction sensing
Built into the operator. The motor monitors how hard it is working and reverses when resistance exceeds the setting. Useful, but only after contact, and it is why a gate that has become mechanically stiff will start reversing on its own — the operator cannot tell the difference between a dragging gate and an obstruction.
Loops
Wire loops cut into the driveway that detect vehicles. An exit loop opens the gate for a car leaving; a safety or shadow loop holds the gate open while a vehicle is under it. Loops detect metal, not people, so they are traffic control with a safety function — never a substitute for photo eyes.
How to Test Your Own Gate
Do this twice a year. It takes five minutes.
- Photo eye test. Start the gate closing and pass a long object — a broom handle, not your arm — through the beam. The gate should stop or reverse immediately.
- Alignment check. Look at the indicator lights on the photo eyes. Solid usually means aligned; blinking or dark usually means a problem. Wipe the lenses and clear any vegetation growing into the beam path.
- Reversal test. With the gate closing, press a sturdy object against the leading edge at about knee height. The gate should reverse. If it keeps pushing, the force setting is too high.
- Edge sensor test. If fitted, press it while the gate is moving. Same expected result.
- Manual release. Practice it. In a power failure or emergency you want to already know where it is and how it works.
- Signs. Confirm the warning placards are still on both sides and legible.
If anything fails these tests, stop using the gate in automatic mode until it is repaired.
Safety Around Children and Pets
The rules that matter most in a household: never let children play near or on the gate, never let anyone walk through a moving gate, and do not hand a remote to a child. Picket spacing matters too — narrow enough that a small child cannot get a head or arm through, which is worth checking on older gates built before anyone thought about it. If you have a pool, note that a driveway gate is not a pool barrier; Texas pool enclosure rules are separate and require self-closing, self-latching gates on the pool itself.
Common Safety Failures We Find
- Photo eyes never installed, or installed and later disconnected because they were “nuisance tripping”
- Force settings turned all the way up to stop a mechanically stiff gate from reversing, which defeats the inherent sensing entirely
- Residential-class operators on multi-family or commercial entrances
- Missing warning signs
- Unguarded pinch points where a slide gate passes the post
- An operator kept in service on a gate that drags or binds, so the safety system is being triggered constantly and nobody trusts it anymore
That last one is the pattern behind most of the others. When a gate develops a mechanical problem, the tempting fix is to turn up the force so it stops reversing. That converts a safety feature into a hazard. Fix the gate instead.

Gates installed before the current requirements, or installed by someone who skipped them, can usually be brought up to standard without replacing anything major — photo eyes, an edge sensor, and correct force settings are a retrofit, not a rebuild.
