Keypads live outside in Houston sun and rain and get punched a dozen times a day. They fail, but they fail in predictable ways, and most of them are fixed on the first visit.
Here is what we check and what you can check before calling (346) 872-8671.
Check these first
- ✓Battery: wireless keypads run on a 9V or AA batteries that last one to two years. A dim or dead backlight is the tell.
- ✓Try a remote: if a remote opens the gate, the operator is fine and the problem is the keypad or its receiver.
- ✓Try the code slowly: worn buttons need a firm, deliberate press. If one digit never registers, the button membrane is failing.
- ✓Lockout: many keypads lock out for a few minutes after several wrong codes.
Why keypads fail
- ✓Water inside the housing, the most common cause, especially on keypads facing the weather with a cracked gasket.
- ✓Sun-baked buttons: the membrane hardens and stops making contact.
- ✓Failed receiver in the operator: the keypad transmits but nothing listens.
- ✓Lost programming after a power outage or battery change on some wireless models.
- ✓Corroded wiring on hardwired keypads, usually at the pedestal base where water collects.
- ✓Lightning or surge damage to the keypad or the operator input it connects to.
Repair, reprogram, or replace
A battery, a reprogram, or a receiver swap is a repair. A keypad with water inside or a hardened membrane is a replacement, and we carry weather-rated replacements on the truck. If you are replacing anyway, this is the moment to move to a multi-user keypad with individual codes or a cellular system with an app, and we can reuse the existing pedestal and wiring.
Placement that prevents the next failure
A keypad that faces into the weather with no hood fails again in two years. We mount replacements with a hood, seal the pedestal, and drip-loop the wiring so water runs away from the housing.
Frequently asked questions
Why did my gate keypad stop working after it rained?+
Water got inside the housing or the pedestal wiring. Dry it out and it may work briefly, but the corrosion continues. Replacement is the reliable fix.
My keypad lights up but the gate does not open.+
The keypad is sending but the receiver or the operator input is not responding. We test the receiver and reprogram or replace it.
Can you reprogram my keypad codes?+
Yes. We add, change, and delete codes on the service call and show you how to do it yourself for next time.
Can I replace a wireless keypad with a wired one?+
Yes, if we can get wire to the post. Otherwise a new wireless keypad or a cellular keypad is the answer.
Do you carry keypads on the truck?+
Yes. Common wireless and wired keypads and receivers for major brands are on the truck for same-visit replacement.
