Gate opener humming but not moving. Stop cycling it.

A hum means the motor is getting power but cannot turn, or it is turning and nothing is connected to it. Either way, repeatedly hitting the remote makes it worse. Use the manual release, get the gate where you need it, and call (346) 872-8671.
These are the causes in the order we find them.
Motor cannot turn
- ✓Failed start capacitor on AC operators: the classic hum. The motor needs the capacitor to get spinning. Cheap part, same-visit fix.
- ✓Low battery on DC operators: the motor gets enough power to hum but not to move the gate. Often follows an outage or a failed charger.
- ✓Mechanical bind: a sagging hinge, a bent slide track, a post that shifted in wet clay, or ice and debris in the track. The motor is fine; the gate will not move.
- ✓Seized motor bearings or a locked gearbox from water intrusion.
Motor turns but the gate does not
- ✓Stripped gear or worn drive sprocket: the motor spins freely and you may hear grinding.
- ✓Broken or slipped chain on slide gates, or a stretched belt.
- ✓Sheared arm or a disconnected linkage on swing operators.
- ✓Manual release left engaged after someone opened the gate by hand.
Clicking instead of humming
A click with no hum usually means a relay is firing but the motor is not getting power: a blown fuse, a failed relay on the board, or a dead motor. That is a board or motor diagnosis, not a capacitor.
Repair or replace
Capacitors, chains, sprockets, and batteries are repairs. A seized motor or stripped gearbox on an operator that is 10 to 15 years old is often the point where a new operator makes more sense, and we will show you the numbers both ways.
Frequently asked questions
Is a humming gate motor dangerous?+
To the motor, yes. Repeated attempts overheat the windings. Use the manual release and stop cycling it until it is fixed.
What is a start capacitor and why does it fail?+
It gives an AC motor the kick to start turning. Heat and age wear it out. It is one of the most common and cheapest gate repairs.
The gate is heavy and drags. Is that why the motor hums?+
Very likely. Fix the hinge or track and the motor will move it again. Turning up the force instead is unsafe and burns out motors.
Can you fix it the same day?+
Capacitors, batteries, chains, and common sprockets are on the truck. Motors and gearboxes for common models often are too.
How do I open the gate by hand?+
Use the manual release on the operator, a key or lever near the arm or drive. If you cannot find it, call and we will talk you through it.
