Wi-Fi gate intercoms sound appealing because there is no monthly plan. The problem is that Wi-Fi rarely reaches a gate post, and when it does, it drops in rain and every time the router reboots. Cellular intercoms need only power and carry a plan. Wired IP intercoms are the third option when the gate is close.
We install all three. Here is how we decide.
Cellular intercoms

Wired IP intercoms
If the gate is close and we can run conduit, a hardwired IP intercom on PoE is the most reliable option with no plan. It gets power and data on one cable, survives Wi-Fi problems, and supports higher-resolution video. It still goes down with your internet, so for properties that need the gate to work regardless, cellular remains the answer.
Our usual recommendation
Long driveway, acreage, or unreliable internet: cellular, usually CellGate. Gate near the house with good Wi-Fi: Wi-Fi or wired IP. Commercial and multifamily: wired IP or cellular depending on the site's network. We test signal at the post before we quote.

Will a Wi-Fi intercom reach my gate?+
Usually not without help. We can add an outdoor access point or a point-to-point bridge, but at that point cellular is often simpler.
Does cellular work in rural areas outside Houston?+
In most of the metro and surrounding counties, yes. We check AT&T and Verizon signal at the post before installing.
Can I answer the gate from anywhere?+
Yes, with cellular, Wi-Fi, or wired IP; all send calls to your phone over the internet.
Which has the best video?+
Wired IP for resolution. Cellular is more than good enough to identify a visitor and read a plate.
Is there a monthly cost for Wi-Fi or wired?+
Usually not, though some brands charge for cloud recording. Cellular carries a plan. We spell out both in the quote.
