A gate that will not open means you are stuck in your own driveway or your tenants are lined up at the entry. Before you call anyone, there are a few things worth checking that fix the problem more often than you would expect. After that, it is a service call, and we can usually be there the same day.

Check these first
These take two minutes and account for a large share of the no-open calls we get.
- ✓Power: is the operator's breaker tripped, the GFCI outlet popped, or the disconnect switch off? Storms trip these constantly in Houston.
- ✓Remote or keypad battery: try a second remote or the keypad. If one works and the other does not, the problem is the device, not the gate.
- ✓Hold-open or vacation mode: many operators and access apps have a lock or hold-closed setting that gets switched on by accident.
- ✓Manual release: if the operator is dead, the manual release lets you open the gate by hand so you are not trapped.
- ✓Obstruction: a branch, trash can, or a vehicle bumper sitting in the photo-eye beam will keep the gate from moving.
Causes that need a technician
If the basics check out, one of these is almost always the problem.
- ✓Dead or failed battery backup: DC operators like the LiftMaster LA400 and Apollo 1500 run off batteries that the charger keeps topped up. When the battery dies, the gate stops even with power at the post.
- ✓Control board failure: lightning and surges kill boards. The operator may hum, click, or show error lights but not move.
- ✓Failed receiver: the operator works from the keypad or a hardwired button but ignores every remote.
- ✓Motor or gearbox: the motor runs but the arm does not move, or you hear grinding.
- ✓Limit switches or encoder: the operator does not know where the gate is, so it refuses to cycle.
- ✓Mechanical bind: a dropped hinge, a bent slide track, or a post that has shifted in wet clay means the operator cannot physically move the gate.
- ✓Loop detector or photo-eye fault: a safety device stuck in the tripped state locks the gate closed.
What we do on the service call
The $89 service call covers a full diagnosis: power, battery, board, receiver, motor, limits, safety devices, and the gate hardware itself. You get a written quote before we replace anything. Most no-open repairs are finished on the first visit because common boards, batteries, receivers, and photo-eyes are on the truck. If you approve the repair, the $89 is credited toward it.
Repair or replace
A dead battery or a failed photo-eye is a repair. A lightning-fried board on a 15-year-old operator with no parts support is usually a replacement, and we will tell you that instead of chasing parts. If the operator is an Elite or an older Apollo or Linear unit, replacement is often the honest answer.
Frequently asked questions
Why won't my gate open after a storm?+
Most often a tripped breaker or GFCI, a surge-damaged control board, or water in the loop detector or photo-eye. Check the breaker first, then call us.
My gate opener hums but the gate does not move. What is wrong?+
Usually a failed capacitor, a stripped gear, or a mechanical bind on the gate itself. Do not keep cycling it; that can burn out the motor.
The keypad works but the remotes do not. Why?+
The receiver in the operator has likely failed or the remotes need reprogramming. This is a same-visit fix.
How do I get out if my gate will not open?+
Every operator has a manual release, usually a key or lever on the operator arm. If you cannot find it, call us and we will walk you through it on the phone.
