Gates do not usually die all at once. They get slow, they hesitate, they stop three feet short and reverse. Those are early symptoms, and fixing them now is far cheaper than the emergency call when the gate finally quits.

Gate is slow
- ✓Weak battery on DC operators: the most common cause. The operator slows as voltage drops. A failing charger or a battery past its life.
- ✓Undersized operator: a heavy iron gate on a light residential operator runs slow and wears out early.
- ✓Dragging hardware: sagging hinges, a dirty slide track, or wheels with flat spots make the operator work harder.
- ✓Low speed setting: some operators have adjustable speed that gets turned down.
Gate stops partway and reverses
- ✓Obstruction sensing: the operator hits resistance at that spot, a dip in the track, a hinge bind, a high point in the driveway, and reverses as designed.
- ✓Photo-eye or safety edge tripping at a specific point in travel.
- ✓Limit or encoder fault: the operator thinks it has reached the end early.
- ✓Loose arm or linkage that slips under load.
Gate is jerky
Jerking usually points to a worn gear, a chain with a bad link, a slide wheel with a flat spot, or a motor with a failing winding. On swing gates, a worn arm pivot or a bent arm shows up as a shudder at the start of travel.

Can I just increase the force setting?+
You can, but you should not. It defeats the obstruction safety and stresses the motor. Fix the drag instead.
How long do gate batteries last?+
Typically two to four years in Houston heat. A battery that is slow to recover after cycling is near the end.
