1. Watch One Full Cycle Like a Stranger

Stand at the gate and run a complete open-close cycle, actually watching and listening. Smooth, consistent speed, quiet hum — healthy. Hesitation at the same spot every time, new grinding or clicking, a shudder at start-up — early symptoms. 2. Wipe the Safety Sensor Eyes

3. Clear the Track or the Arc

4. Grease the Hinges and Rollers

5. Test the Manual Release

Disengage it, push the gate by hand, re-engage. You are testing two things: that the release works before a power outage makes it urgent, and how the gate feels — a leaf that glides is healthy, a leaf that fights you is loading the operator every cycle.

6. Check the Battery Date

Backup batteries live 3-5 years in Texas heat. If you do not know your battery's age, it came with the operator — check the install date on your paperwork. Write the replacement date on the new battery with a paint marker so future-you does not have to guess.

7. Hands on the Hardware

Grab the gate and rock it gently. Loose hinge bolts, a wobbly post, play in the operator arm connection — all tighten easily now, all destroy components slowly if left. Look at welds for rust lines or hairline cracks, especially at the top hinge corner where load concentrates.

• Operator internals: capacitor health, board condition, motor draw, gear wear — the failures that give no external warning
• Limit switch calibration: travel limits drift; recalibration keeps the gate stopping exactly where it should
• Force and entrapment settings: a safety test that verifies the gate reverses at the resistance standards require — this protects people, not just equipment
• Alignment and footing check: measuring for the early millimeters of Houston clay post movement, correctable now, expensive later
• Access control test: keypads, CellGate, intercoms, remote range
