Custom Gate Repair: Fixing Ornamental and One-of-a-Kind Gates

Houston has a lot of custom gates. Estate entrances in River Oaks and Memorial, arched iron in the Heights, hand-forged work from decades ago in older neighborhoods, and thousands of one-off designs on newer builds in The Woodlands and Katy. When one of these gets hit by a car, rusts through at the bottom, or just wears out a hinge, the owner usually gets one of two answers from the first company they call: “we can’t match that” or “you need a new gate.” Neither is usually true.

Why Custom Gates Get Misquoted

Most companies that advertise gate repair are installers. They hang prefabricated gates and service operators. That is legitimate work, but it means when they look at a bent ornamental picket, they see a part they cannot order. Their honest options are a mismatched patch or a replacement, so that is what they quote.

A gate company with its own fabrication shop sees the same picket and sees a pattern to reproduce. That is the whole difference. The rest of this article is what the repair looks like when fabrication is on the table.

Common Custom Gate Repairs

Matching a damaged picket, scroll, or finial

The damaged piece is measured or, when it is too far gone, an intact piece from elsewhere on the gate is used as the template. The replacement is bent, forged, or cut to match — scrolls on a jig, pickets from matching stock, finials from cast or forged reproductions — then welded in, ground smooth, and finished to blend. On a well-executed repair you should not be able to find the new piece.

Restoring rusted-through sections

Ornamental gates rust in the same places as any steel gate: bottom rails, joints, and inside hollow members. On a custom gate the repair is more careful because the surrounding decorative work has to be preserved. The rusted section is cut out cleanly, new steel is fitted and welded, and the whole gate is refinished. Where the original was solid wrought iron rather than hollow steel, that is good news — solid bar takes far longer to rust through and restores beautifully.

Straightening after vehicle impact

The most common reason we see a custom gate. Depending on the damage, rails and frames are heated and worked back true, individual elements are replaced, and the gate is re-hung and re-squared. Decorative elements that were crushed rather than bent are reproduced.

Hinge and hardware replacement on heavy gates

Custom iron gates are often heavier than their hinges were rated for, especially older ones hung on hardware that was standard forty years ago. Adding automation to an existing custom gate

A frequent request: the family loves the gate, they just want it to open from the car. Retrofitting an operator onto a heavy custom gate means sizing the operator to the real weight, checking that the posts and hinges can take the added stress, and sometimes reinforcing the frame where the arm attaches. Done right, a decades-old gate becomes an automatic gate without losing anything.

Repair or Replace a Custom Gate?

The rule we use: if the frame and posts are structurally sound, repair. The decorative work is the irreplaceable part, and a sound frame means it can be preserved. Replacement makes sense when the frame is rusted through in multiple places, when a vehicle has folded it beyond what can be worked true, or when the owner wants a different design anyway. In that last case, we can fabricate a new gate that reproduces the original pattern — which is often what people actually want when they say “replace.”

Finishing: Where Custom Repairs Succeed or Fail

A repair that is structurally perfect but finished in the wrong color or sheen looks like a patch. Matching the finish means identifying the original — powder coat, enamel, faux-patina, or a hand-applied metallic — and either matching it in the field or, for the best result, stripping and refinishing the whole gate so everything ages together.
